Dr. Helen Shim-Chang is a graduate of Smith College, where she was on the Dean’s List. She has been practicing dermatology since 2000 and was on the faculty of the Departments of Pathology and Dermatology at the Mount Sinai Health System until the fall of 2017 when she opened her private practice.
Dr. Shim has lectured both locally and nationally on various topics including blistering skin diseases, gynecologic disorders, cutaneous changes of menopause, unusual and severe skin diseases of inpatients as well as on challenges of skin pathology diagnosis. She has published several peer-reviewed articles and has been named Teacher of the Year multiple times by the residents at the Mount Sinai Department of Dermatology.
A specialist in the early diagnosis and treatment of pigmented lesions, Dr. Shim uses extensive total body photography and sequential dermoscopy to monitor atypical moles (nevi). Dr. Shim’s 60-minute total body examinations are among the most detailed and comprehensive, during which she maps moles for monitoring or treatment. For precancerous lesions (actinic keratoses), she employs photodynamic therapy (PDT) to reduce the risk of cutaneous cancer.
